Course Description

Have you ever wondered what a D.O. is? Have you been curious about osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) and how it might benefit your patients? In this live CME event designed for healthcare providers that care for pediatric patients, we will dive into these questions and more. This educational event will discuss the ways that OMT can be utilized to help support pediatric patients of all ages. We will present the research that supports the use of OMT in pediatric patients, as well as a discussion about challenges of osteopathic research. In infants, we will discuss the use of OMT to address concerns such as latch difficulties, colic, reflux, plagiocephaly, and torticollis. For older children, we will describe the osteopathic approach - including OMT - for asthma, constipation, recurrent otitis media/sinusitis, and more. We will also discuss the use of OMT in adolescent patients. In this population, it can be beneficial to address dysmenorrhea, sports injuries, concussions, and more.

Statement of Need: This activity will address the underutilization of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) to help care for common pediatric problems.

Professional Practice Gap Analysis:
Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is an underused modality in the care of pediatric patients. The evidence shows benefits for a number of different conditions including recurrent otitis media, asthma, plagiocephaly, breastfeeding difficulties, and constipation. The evidence for pediatric OMT also shows that it is a safe option to offer for patients. Despite the known multiple benefits and evidence-supported safety, OMT is rarely utilized for pediatric patients. This event will seek to narrow the gap by educating on what OMT is, how it can be applied to pediatric patients, and a review of the current evidence that supports its pediatric applications. Osteopathic physicians have a unique understanding of how the infant’s and children’s unique anatomy and physiology could be contributing to several common issues, and how management with OMT could help support these patients. OMT can be a great independent tool for treating patients, such as those with musculoskeletal pain, but also a great adjunctive treatment for patients and families as well.  This course will strive to educate fellow physicians and other health care providers on these problems and how OMT in these populations can best be utilized to help improve patient outcomes and patient satisfaction. It will also speak to the evidence gap that exists with regards to OMT and managing the pediatric patient while presenting the most up-to-date research to support the use of OMT in pediatrics.

Educational Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
  *  Define osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) and how it ties into the history and philosophy of osteopathic medicine.

  *  Differentiate osteopathic manipulative treatment from other manual medicine modalities to help determine when referring for OMT might be beneficial to patients.
  *  Illustrate the application of an osteopathic approach to the pediatric patient for a variety of conditions.
  *  Review the current literature that supports the use of OMT to support and care for pediatric patients.
  *  Demonstrate the application of OMT in a pediatric patient including different developmental considerations, awareness of unique pediatric anatomy, and discussions around treatment planning.
